KEEPING IT IN THE FAMILY (June 2010)
Gordon Telfer

The 2009-2010 bowls season at Corinda Lawn Bowls Club saw an unusual event occur for the Stewart family in that Pauline Stewart won the Ladies A Singles Championship and Bill Stewart not only won the Men's A Singles Championship, but also won the Men's B Singles Championship, an event which is rare in any bowling club.

Once a person has won the A Singles they are no longer eligible to enter a lower event, but at the time of entry, Bill had not won any titles. He progressed to the final of both events simultaneously, and through an exceptionally commendable bowling performance, came out on top. His wife, Pauline, won the Ladies Singles title in the same year, again a first time win.

Bill's win in the A Singles was against a very experienced member, who has won the title on more than one occasion. His win was due to his accurate drawing of shots into the head, which he was able to repeat in the B final which was played the following week, this time against a new and upcoming player.

We are very proud of these two great players, both valuable club members who contribute greatly to the volunteer work at the Corinda Bowls Club.

Wal Sinclair & John Evans
Two of the Clubs finest gentlemen (4/12/2010)

This is a small tribute to John and Wal - both in their nineties and long time members of this Club. They are both well liked by all members and they each contribute generously to the life of the Club by way of service and generosity.
In addition they have been and still are very good bowlers. In fact any skip is glad to have them in their teams for both competition and social games.
It's hard to find an appropriate quotation that we could apply to them in relation to bowls but, taking a small liberty with one of the sports mentioned in the A.B. (Banjo) Paterson poem "Any Other Time", we can imagine their opponents words in the bar when they explain their loss to either of these fine gentlemen.

All of us play our very best game -
Any other time,
Bowls or billiards, it's all the same-
Any other time.
Lose a match and you always say,
"Just my luck! I was 'off' today!
I could have beaten him quite half-way-
Any other time!"

DAD’S ARMY (September 2009)

On Monday and Thursday mornings the Club is a hive of activity as volunteers arrive on or before 6am to clean up the premises for the coming weeks activities. In winter it’s still dark and cold but in summer we get to see the new day dawning.
Each person has his particular job and the action begins. Stan and Neville are responsible for the Dining room (Bob Bamford has taken Neville’s place in his absence); Bob Haskard and Ray Shipp vacuum the carpeted areas in the bar, dining room and offices and clean down the tables; Lorrie and Alan attend to the bar area, clean the beer lines and hose down the bar and toilet mats; Ivan sweeps out the tiled office and games room areas and cleans the new toilets; Bob Healy cleans the main men’s toilet and fills and puts out the wheely bins for collection; Ray Stringfellow cleans the Kitchen together with other needs as necessary.
Dad’s Army numbers have increased considerably with the recent additions of Neville, Ray Stringfellow, Ivan, Bob Bamford and Bob Haskard.
Meanwhile Lex Goodwin is busy with his duties as Treasurer recording the proceeds of sales , green fees etc., drawing cheques for bill payments and other financial duties.

Five Corinda bowlers recently represented the Queensland Teachers' Bowls Club in the annual clash against the New South Wales Education Department Bowls Club. Liz Liddle, Joan and Alan Hungerford and Anne and Ray Moffitt helped the Queenslanders repeat last year's victory over the Blues.

NSW won the first test at Cleveland but could not cope with the home team at Jindalee and Bramble Bay.  Consequently, Queensland repeated last year's effort of winning all three trophies
"        Rose Bowl for most tests
"        Shield for most points scored in any test
"        Trophy for most points scored over-all

While the Queenslanders were the winners, everyone was a grinner as the carnival reflected the aims of the annual "battle"…..good fellowship, good bowls and have a great time.

We look forward to Sydney in 2011.

CORINDA LADIES SUCCESSFUL IN PENNANTS (5/10/2010)

Congratulations to our ladies on winning the Division 2 Pennant flag on Friday 17 September. Their opponent was Ipswich who had lost by only 1 and 5 to Corinda in the 2 rounds. The final was another tight game. Ipswich led by 17 shots half way through the game but Corinda got their act together and were victors by 6 shots - Final score 62 - 56.
WELL DONE LADIES AND CONGRATULATIONS

Division 3 had to win their last game against Sunnybank to make the play-offs but went down by a narrow margin.

President Liz extended thanks to the Mens Club and the ladies who helped to make the week such a success.
