A Brief History of Corinda Bowls Club Inc
- The original meeting to form the Corinda Bowls Club was held on 20th July 1944 with 63 foundation members.
- The Club opened for play August 1946, the Ladies Club was established February 1947 and the Corinda Bowls Club officially opened June 1947.
- The flagpole was donated by the Cox family as a memorial to the men and women who gave their lives in World War II.
- Annual subscription in 1947 was 4 guineas ($4.4s.0d.- $8.40) and green fees in 1954 were 2s.6d. (25 cents).
- A second green was opened for play in November 1948. The greens were originally planted with couch grass and were replanted with tif dwarf in 1979.
- A new clubhouse was opened in 1956 and in 1970 the dining room extension was built.
- Since the 1970's there have been a number of additions and improvements carried out.
- Erection of floodlighting over No 2 Green for night bowls in 2001 and replacement of the ditches around No. 1 Green
- In 2005, a retractable shade was erected covering all 7 rinks on No. 1 Green.
- Other improvements include rebuilding the rear loading landing in 2008; installation of new scoreboards in 2008; and installation of water tanks with an overall capacity of over 115,000 litres principally for watering the greens.
- Also in 2008: building extension works are currently in progress adjacent to the function room and will incorporate men's, ladies and handicap toilet facilities and an additional office area; and, of course, general maintenance works ensuring that the Club premises and playing surfaces are in top condition for the enjoyment of players and members of the Club.
We have a five year Club Development Plan for the period 2008 -2012. The plan determines the likely future demand for facilities and services at the Club and identifies key tasks such as: - Continuous updating of office equipment; installation of a retractable shade structure over No. 2 Green; Installation of floodlighting on No. 1 Green; kitchen refurbishment; replacement of ditches on No. 2 Green; installation of air conditioning; continuous training opportunities for current and additional umpires, coaches, officials and administrators.
Club Facilities
The Club has well maintained grounds and the boundaries are bordered with grevilleas and other flowering trees and shrubs. It is unique in that it is surrounded on two sides by Nosworthy Park and the natural bushland sloping down towards Oxley Creek and Common. While being only a short walk to Corinda shopping centre and with only light local traffic, the Club enjoys a tranquil setting opposite several beautiful examples of Queensland High set dwellings with large garden surrounds.
The facilities include a bar with an adjacent lounge and a large function room that is put to great use by the members for our Games days and other celebrations.
We have a number of organizations with regular bookings including the Orchid Society, Bridge Club, Sherwood Healthy Slimmers, Sherwood Afternoon Stamp Club, Neighbourhood Watch, etc.
Our Kitchen and facilities serve our hirers and us well. Many function organizers provide their own caterers who find that everything they need is available. These facilities are available for hire and are popular for wedding receptions, 21st Birthdays and other celebrations.
For an inspection, bookings and enquiries contact Mr. Lex Goodwin at the Club.
With respect to the playing Greens, arrangements can be made to conduct Corporate Bowls days, and events for special groups and barefoot bowlers on days other than member and/or competition playing days. Free coaching and use of Club bowls is available.
